Mandla is known as a tribal district, famous for Kanha National Forest, worldwide.
I was posted there as Assistant Engineer in charge civil sub division M. P. State Electricity Board, about 20 class three & four employees were working under me. Last day of the month is salary day in our organization, In the evening when the disbursement of salary was over I noticed that few gundas of the township were roaming on bikes around the office premises & were talking to my employees in absurd manner. I gathered the information. I was stunned to know that most of the poor employees were under great debts & these gunda people were there to collect the SOOD i.e. very high rate of interest ranging 10 % to 20% every month. My employees have paid much more than what they have ever taken, but still the original loan amount was not reduced to any extent. The SOOD KHORES were in practice to take only the heavy interests. Poor fellows were not enough literate, most of them were in habit of playing SATTA, & were heavy drunker.
I could not digest the issue. I took initiation & held a meeting with employees & then with the moneylenders. We officers contributed some amount & after negotiation, threat of police complaint, final payments were settled with instructions not to give any further loan to any of my subordinates .In due course money contributed by officers was returned to them in installments. I motivated the employees, we started with AKHAND RAMAYAN PATH, family picnics, cultural activities in colony amongst family members of employees were conducted, and I promoted them for small savings with U T I., etc. All these activities resulted positively. Cordial, healthy supportive environment was created. Most of them left drinking in due course of time. Now I am posted at Jabalpur but whenever any of them come here they visit me with regards. 3-4 children have become engineer, girls got married, and few employees are retired now. They say that my small work have changed there life .
